Stuck in the Mud

How to Get Unstuck

Ever have those days – or weeks, or months – where you feel like you didn’t do what you needed to get done? It’s as if there is a force field that pulls you down and keeps you stuck. You get up with great intentions to accomplish your goals, and get on track, and then a few hours later you find yourself lying in front of the television eating popcorn. Or worse, having dinner and wondering to yourself, “What DID I do today?”

It’s a common problem – get stuck and stay stuck. But if you are on the road to change, and want to get where you want to go, it might be time to wash off your shoes and step out of the proverbial mud. Here are five things you can do to get yourself on solid, unsinking ground:

  1. Take the time to write out your desired outcome. State clearly what success looks like for you. If you were where you want to be, what would be happening? How will you measure success, both quantitatively and qualitatively? Be clear and write it down. Keep it in a prominent place so you are referring to it often.
  2. Set priorities each and every day. When you look at your calendar either the night before, or in the morning before each day starts, organize what you need to do in order of priority. Pick three things every day you commit to doing.
  3. Create a schedule. Set time aside, in advance, for what you want to do. Want to get back on an exercise program? Want to go shopping to get healthier food in the house? Want to learn a new skill? Break down what you need to do and schedule it in. Every day, you can make some progress toward the goal if you plan in advance.
  4. Identify your obstacles and work around them. Take the time to be clear about what’s held you back so far. What creates the mud for you? Then categorize the obstacles – what can you control? What can you influence? What’s out of your control? Focus on those things you can control and influence. Commit to removing the obstacles instead of being stymied by them.
  5. Do something each day you enjoy and that gives you energy. Fuel yourself with things you like, and that are good for you.

Remember that to get out of the mud, you need to put one foot in front of the other, step by step. Start taking a step every day to get where you really want to go.
